Karen: I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. When times are tough it can be hard to feel thankful, but I am very grateful for the presence of my family and friends in my life. They have been the rock that keeps me anchored in difficult times. May all of you find comfort and peace on this day of thanks.
Doug: And a Happy Thanksgiving from me, as well. I am thankful for a great family, a good job, and this little community that's formed on the Bronze Age Babies -- you folks really enrich my love of comics reading. All the best to you and yours during this holiday season!
Happy Thanksgiving. A normal workday for us in the UK but I'll toast your special day by reading the Fantastic Four Marvel Comics Series paperback from '77 (issues #1 through #6. All stories complete and unabridged, don't you know!). Oh and maybe have a bit of cake, too.
Yes, I'm also currently in one of those heathen countries that doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, but best wishes to Karen & Doug and everyone else. Enjoy your feasts and time spent with family and friends. Wil - do mean that FF color pocketbook? Had it, along with all of the equivalent Spider-man, Dr. Strange, Hulk and Conan titles. Loved them to pieces, and read them so much that they fell to pieces...
Yes, that's it. I'd never seen one until recently and I love it, probably heralding a trip to eBay to see if I can pick up some of the others. It seems there were quite a few different titles.
I loved those little paperbacks in the '70's! If I recall, I had an FF one, a Spidey one, and I am near-positive that I had a Legion book as well. Great fun! You know, there really was a lot of periphery fun in comic collecting back then -- lots and lots to pester my mom about buying!
The self-bloating meal is nearly upon us -- everyone have a great day!
Doug & Wil, the Marvel mass-market pocketbooks from the late '70s, featuring reprints of the initial runs of various titles included, as far as I know, 3 Spider-man volumes, 2 Hulk volumes, 2 Dr. Strange volumes, one each of the FF and Captain America. Had them all except the Cap book. There were also about 4 or 5 Conan books, also color reprint pocketbooks, but with less issues in each title, i.e. they did not even reprint the entire initial run (mostly) drawn by B.W. Smith. I only had two of those, and I recall one had some Gil Kane art in it as well. It's too bad Marvel didn't do more stuff like this, i.e., like those digests DC put out in the dozens (including a number of awesome Legion volumes). DC also did some black & white pocketbook reprints: I remember having a Batman book that reprinted a bunch of the O'Neill/Adams stories from the early '70s (the non-Ra's al Ghul stuff). Anyway, Doug, you're right, all of those peripheral publishing lines by the big two were really a boon to the young comics fan back then - you could get some really great reprints at very reasonable prices.
I've now got 4 - FF, vols 2 and 3 of Spidey and Cap with what looks like a later '82 published X-Men one (which has Giant-Size X-Men 1 in it) on the way. They're being left in places where a certain 7 year old son of mine just might happen across them.
