I love the way Ross draws a man on fire. One of the interesting things about having seventy-five years of the Human Torch is that the way his powers are represented have really gone through some curious changes.
Ross seems to hearken back to the Carl Burgos' original a bit with a healthy smidgeon of Russ Heath's awesome rendition from the 50's.
The technique Kirby adopted of using tiny lines to show the Torch was fascinating to me as a kid and I spent a lot of time trying to capture that detail, usually to pitiful effect.
When Roy took over he ordered the look changed to have more of a shimmer and the Torch has been changing right along through the years.
I just wish there was a decent Fantastic Four series to go along with it.
I am in love with the current related "FF" series that has Ant-Man, Medusa, Ms. Thing and She-Hulk watching over things while the "real" FF are off on some adventure - but it is ending with issue #16 or 17 (#13 just came out).
Oh and in Ross's defense. It sure it hard to depict "femininity" in a space suit!
Love it. No Marvel movie will ever look this good. Though I don't why this is attached to Marvel NOW where everyone has to be buried under tons of armor and visible seams. Even the Hulk for god sake!
I think it's brilliant. Personally I can't get enough Ross. I absolutely love how he draws the Thing, and the Torch as well. I wish he was able to draw interiors on a regular basis. But I'll take what I can get.
Nice touch with the astronauts. I don't think I've seen anyone take that approach before.
ReplyDeleteAgreed on the astronauts addition, which harkens my argument for a redo of the FF franchise, placing it back in the early '60s where it belongs.
ReplyDeleteAs for the suited figures, is it me or do any of 'em look like a female (Suzie)..?
At first glance, they all look masculine to me.
Yeah, Sue's face looks an awful lot like Johnny's -- intentional?
ReplyDeleteAs to the Four in costume, Sue appears to be appropriately outfitted...

Rip Off
Doug, agreed on Sue's face (which is what I was referring to..). I believe she's the one sittin' next to ol' Reed.
ReplyDeleteLooks like wax dummies to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by with your usual ray of sunshine, Matt. And hey -- not everyone can draw wax dummies so realistically, huh?
