NOTE: This post was updated on May 5 2020. When I came to it, I'd had 15 covers as samples; I regret to inform that there was no way I could recall which covers I'd shown. However, I can be reasonably sure that these six would have been among them. I apologize for any inconvenience. -Doug
The first one that came to mind when I saw that "old" Teen Titans cover is the one from New Teen Titans #4.
ReplyDeleteAnd also, one of my favorite ever super-hero confrontation covers, also by Perez: JLA #200.
What about X-Men #134 - the X-Men vs. the Hellfire Club, a classic cover in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI thought of another one this morning, and it has a similar angle to Teen Titans #50 and to Edo's suggestion of NTT #4 -- Avengers #142, with our heroes facing down a charge from the Wild, Wild West's best.
ReplyDeleteOK, so we have four covers for our next post -- keep 'em coming!

That King Size Avengers #2 is one of my all time favorite face-off covers. I don't believe in all my years of collecting that I ever came across that FF Annual 11. I would suggest Avengers #53 with the X-Men, and Avengers #70 battling the Squadron Sinister. Not sure if Avengers #71 would really count but I like that one too.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a comic book, per se, but the cover of The Art of Neal Adams (Volume 1) rocked my young world.
ReplyDelete1) It's art by Neal Adams
2) It features the characters he'd drawn for Marvel lined up on the left and the characters he'd draw for DC on the right. The heroes are all tensing and a half-step away from a brawl...with Atomic Mouse floating in between the two lines playing peacemaker.
This was before the Superman-Spider-Man milestone. The sheer nerd amazement of that cover required I had to go lie quietly for a while to calm my heart rate. Took some 40 years before Perez-Busiek did it for realsies.
Not from the Bronze Age, but I always liked the parody face-off cover on this Sealab 2021 dvd, probably inspired by X-men 100:

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of books about artists, did everyone see that IDW is giving John Buscema the Artist's Edition treatment? If you've not seen these, you should. They are huge books that are full of the very highest quality scans of original art, plus loads of extras. The Big John book will feature complete reprints of Silver Surfer #s 5, 6, and 8. I know Rip Jagger has one of these (Kirby's New Gods, I believe... Rip??), so maybe he'll be along to comment.
They are pricey, but I'd lie if I said I wasn't strongly considering plunking down some of my sales returns for a copy of the Buscema book.

Doug - Oooh. I do likes me some Big John art. I'll have to have a looksee myself!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorites. Spidey facing off against the Sinister Six (with the Lizard thrown in for good measure).
ReplyDelete Spectacular Spider-Man Treasury Edition
Sorry for all the deletions. I was trying to create a direct link to the cover art, but I just can't get it to work for some reason.
ReplyDeleteAnother face-off cover is The Defenders #119 - it has a similar design to X-Men #100 and #134.
ReplyDeleteWhat I really loved about the Avengers 141 cover (and my first Avengers was 139) was the added action. Beast bounding into action, the arrow flying across the cover. Just blew me away.
ReplyDeleteThe Marvel Triple Action cover where the Avengers are completely surrounded. And then I think Quicksilver ran around and took everybody's gun. Good times, ... good times.
The Prowler (had everything fine with the system until the power grid was shut off by dickless here).
PS: Doug, the new A National Conversation 2014 Fall Event Calender is in. Looks nice!
Another face off is West Coast Avengers 8 although that may be slightly this side of the Bronze Age. Again with a team of western heroes. I would also maybe include Invaders 15 and the Crusaders.
