GNARGH! Directly up my ballywick (although I think I'm mis-using that euphimism badly), and I'm not going to be able to offer much enlightened commentary, because. . . I'm buried alive in theater shows at the moment. . .
(HBGirl & I are both in a tiny, local community theater production of HARVEY that opens on Friday. . . and it's absorbing pretty much every waking moment. Aaaaaand I'm stepping in to try to help get the set finished. Aaaaaaand I'm finishing up the set for the much larger production up next at the theater I work for. . . )
Best High School Production: OKLAHOMA!-- Niles, Michigan-- 1978. (Actually, best OKLAHOMA! I've seen period)
Best One-Person Show: ZERO HOUR-- which is a multiple award-winning Zero Mostel impersonation piece.
And, geeze, there I have to stop-- too much to sort through over the years. . . and gotta get a groggy HBGirl off to school.
Two that come to mind immediately was the 'Mama Mia' production that came locally here about 10yrs ago. Had a HORRIBLE time with former spouse (bought the tickets for her...), but the show itself was top-notch, great music.
The second was the the 1992 show 'Every Good Boy Deserves Favor' with the cast of Trek-Next Gen acting (Stewart, Frakes, McFadden, Spiner, and Colin Meaney). With Next Gen at it's peak back then, it was a fantastic show, lots of great energy and humor.
The most recent one I saw was amazing, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (I had only ever seen the movie version), staring Michael C. Hall (of Dexter fame and who was an undergrad at the same time I was at Earlham College).
I haven't see that many theatre shows. I have been in more than I've seen back in HS/college days.
My sons went to Anderson (youngest still does), which is in the same conference as Earlham. And Redartz used to live in Anderson.
Small world, this BAB community.
By the way, we saw the "Broadway in Chicago" productions of Jersey Boys (twice) and Motown the Musical -- I'd go back to both again. Most recently we saw a production of STOMP! and it was a lot of fun as well.
After many years of seeing the movie version of A Christmas Carol/Scrooge, finally seeing a local production of A Christmas Carol really gave the whole story a new meaning. That one has really stuck with me over the years.
Back in our salad days, the wife and I would go to see the out door productions of different operas. Cheap tickets, bring a blanket and bag of snacks, they would scroll the lyrics in English across the top of the stage. We really thought we were something. Finally sprang for the good seats for a performance at the Performing Arts Center. Had to dress up, no snacks, the seats didn't recline and there was no subtitles. Most of those operas are NOT in English.
Still owe the wife a trip to see The Blue Man Group. Maybe I can talk her into one of the Fathom events.
Oh, question of youse guys. Our "Pops" Orchestra is doing their around the city tour where they are playing music from the movies. I think this year it's Titanic, Forest Gump, Pirates of the Caribbean and Avatar. Would that be enough to entice you into attending?
I have near the finalization of my own local production. I want to combine the best of Glee with the best of Cops and the best of the hand held faux documentary film style for a weekly show titled: School Cop Rock!!! (Thanks Steven Bochco)
(Go easy on me, for I mean you no harm. It’s possible charm is in order But you make it so hard when you throw up your guard I’m not here to spar so go easy on me.
Oh, the clanging of swords And the war of the words doesn’t move me. See, my heart barely works and it’s covered in dirt, It still kind of hurts, so go easy on me).
PS: Has everyone heard that Sony and Marvel Studios have reached an agreement on Spider-Man? He may become a part of the new Marvel Cinematic Universe!!!
Tim and Eric with John C Reilly as Dr. Steve Brule.
Their shows are great (Awesome Show and Check it Out!) on Adult Swim, and I was lucky enough to get tickets to their (sold out) stage show! Amazing! John C Reilly as Dr Brule is a comic genius!
Prowl, those are four very solid, distinctive scores-- that's totally a concert worth catching. Pirates tends to be a little overdone (kind of a staple for good high school bands/orchestras), but it's sooo catchy & invigorating. I remember Avatar being musically strong, but the main melodies have never stuck with me. Forest Gump has such an achingly sweet main title theme that I pretty much tear up after the first measure. . .

(Back from a full run-through of HARVEY. There have been some. . . struggles. Plus the bar next door got a new huge sound system yesterday-- mounted on the shared adjoining wall to the theater. . . )

I still have to take in Spamalot at some point.

Doug, I went to a Friends school for four years of H.S and then two years of Earlham (I dropped out).
ReplyDeleteI have a love/hate for those Quakers, but glad for the experience.
As our old ironic sports change went:
Fight! Fight! Inner Light! Kill, Quakers, Kill!
