Happy Independence Day from the land of your evil ex-oppressors - I'd never seen that "1776 Captain America" before but now I've seen it twice on the same day, on here and on Rip Jagger's Dojo :)
Now that's a King I can support. I'm an American in Scotland, but I'm wearing my red, white and blue Captain America shirt! Happy Fourth of July everyone! -JJ
Let's celebrate our independence one and all, on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. We might've had a slight (ahem) disagreement a few centuries back, but all that's behind. What is in front is a world of wonders, if we can stop being jittery all the time about everything and just enjoy it. Problems will be with us always, big ones. We have to choose to do something about them.
I've been reading Invaders comics lately and that gung-ho spirit is infectious. :)
Hmm maybe Kirby was trying to invent a new superhero here - since the United States was just formed, he could have named him 'Captain 13 states' or 'Captain Independence'!

It's really a terrific Colonial Superhero design, isn't it? My one tiny quibble is that colonial Steve might eschew the powdered white wig, as that wasn't so much a "common man" fashion accessory-- it was more associated with rank or elevated social position.
Yeesh, myself-- supposed to sing in an impromptu Barbershop Quartet tonight for the activities at my wife's church, and find myself debilitated w/ a head/chest cold, and very little voice to be had. The result may not be pretty to behold. . .
I have to say I really like that the Red Skull is in a British uniform.... Kirby definitely had an interesting outlook on the world. Bicentennial Battles was - and is - an underrated book.
Not being American, 4th July doesn't have that resonance for me, but all the same - Give me liberty or give me death!
Happy 4th to everyone Stateside and beyond. I love the image from Bicentennial Battles; there were two more like that, one with a Cowboy Cap in the Old West, and an Astro-Cap from the spacefaring future. And Sean, the uniform may look like an old British Redcoat outfit, but as the blurb, and also Redartz noted, he's supposed to be a Hessian mercenary
Those Hessians do seem to loom large in Revolutionary tales. The Headless Horseman in Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Irving's story, that is) was also supposed to be a Hessian.
Yes, but the Hessians were mercenaries working for the British, right? No doubt I'm missing out on something that may be obvious to anyone from the US, but that still seems like an unusual image to me....
Sean, yep, the British had a very large contingent of Hessian mercenaries helping them fight the Yanks during the American Revolutionary War. It's quite well documented in this completely, entirely and utterly accurate short historical film.
Doug; love that Hessian Red Skull! Happy 4th to you and Karen. And best wishes to all the BAB"s everywhere!
