#Inktober - John Buscema's Sentinel of the Spaceways

Doug: Why not end this run of weekend celebrations the way we began -- with the Michelangelo of Comics? Today I'm featuring work from IDW's John Buscema's Silver Surfer Artist's Edition. All images shown are contained in that wonderful tome, with the exception of the surprise at the end. Enjoy!

And why not close out #Inktober with Earth's Mightiest Heroes?

Note the crease down the center of the page? That's standard operating procedure for Big John, and you'll find that on much
of his original art. Cool little nuance, as the master sought the center from which to build out.

  1. Wow, all treats, no tricks this morning! John's Surfer was excellent. I particularly love the panel of the Surfer looking back over his shoulder, framed only by the speed lines in the background. Very striking, very effective.

And, needless to say, the Avengers splash is staggering. Those figures, especially Cap and the Hulk, are just plowing right off the page. My eyes are smiling...

  3. I really like Shalla Bal in shadows coming through the smoke and the man clinging to thee surfboard as the Surfer accelerates. John Buscema filled each panel well.

I wonder how IDW was able to collect all of the original art; it must've been scattered to the winds.

  4. Like Martinex, I like the Silver Surfer images, all of them in fact. Big John was really firing on all cylinders when he was doing the art for that series. And yes, that poster/splash of the Avengers is quite magnificent.

By the way, isn't now Inkvember? :P

  5. You are correct, Edo! Halloween falling on that last Saturday of October threw off our schedule a bit.

Martinex, I think IDW must do a heckuva lot of research on art dealers, eBay, etc. to find out who owns these pages. I do know they'll pay an owner the S&H costs both ways to allow owned art to be scanned in color for these productions. I believe a dealer named Mike Burkey owns a TON of Romita pages and has been a major source for the three JR, SR. artist editions.
