Discuss: The Wolverine
Karen: We saw this film last night. I enjoyed the beginning, with Logan at the lowest point we've ever seen him, and I liked the direction they seemed to be going. But the ending veered off wildly, almost as if it were another film entirely, and really dragged the whole film down for me. Leaving this as spoiler-free as we can for a while, please feel free to discuss your thoughts on the movie -I'm also curious to see how many of you are even going to go see it! P.S. If you go, sit through the credits -there's a fun scene with some old friends you won't want to miss.

This is definitely a "wait for DVD" film for me.
Though they have been promoting the heck out of the trade collection of Claremont/Miller Wolverine mini-series at the comic shop I patronize, which is nice to see even if (after a recent reread) I feel like I've outgrown thinking it was awesome.
That's kind of a nice ink brush drawing of Wolverine. Who is the artist?
I think I saw the first X-Men movie, but haven't seen the others. Which ones are the best, and how does The Wolverine rank in there Karen?
No interest.., I happened on the 1st IronMan again yesterday on cable, more interested in watching that at home than this..
I just haven't been able to get into the X-Men series at all. I watched the first two, and part of the third, but haven't seen any of the subsequent movies, which is odd because I really enjoyed Uncanny X-Men during the Clairmont/Cockrum/Byrne/Cockrum days.
Yep, I'm passing on this, too (Karen, I have to admire your commitment to these super-hero flicks). Actually, I haven't even seen the first Wolverine yet - I can't even be bothered with the DVD, I'm just waiting for it to be shown on TV.
Like Graham, I really haven't been enjoying the X-movies (and like Graham, despite the fact that I was deeply into the Claremont/Byrne X-men and way beyond). As I mentioned here recently, the one I liked best, even though I didn't think it was spectacular or anything, was First Class.
Going to see it tonight, with a Fandango gift card (so if it sucks, no money spent, just time).
I enjoyed the 1st X-men movie and I thought the 2nd was even better. Since then, the franchise hasn't done much for me. I'm still mad that we didn't get a big cgi "Phoenix Effect", and the 3rd movie just had too much going on.
But I think Jackman's a decent actor, so I expect 'The Wolverine' to be a solid 2 and a half star actioner.
The local paper gave it 3 1/2 out of 4 stars, which surprised me; enough that my interest in seeing it in theater increased. Your spoiler-free review has me thinking it should go back to "Blu-ray purchase" land... :-)
Edo - going to the movies is about the only activity outside the house we can do here, since it's averaging around 107 degrees right now! So we see our share of stinkers -I think the worst so far was "Fast and the Furious 7" or whatever number they're up to. Terrible!! I still hope to see "Red2" before it moves out of theaters. Probably next week!
Garett - My rankings are only my opinion, but I liked the first X-Men film, X-Men 2, and First Class. I don't think I can put The Wolverine in there with those films just because the ending really pulls it down. It's a shame. If they had done what I thought they were setting out to do, it could have been a very cool movie.
I saw The Wolverine yesterday and IMO it's an outstanding "superhero" film, with as much psychological drama as outlandish action. For once, Logan actually seems vulnerable -- at lest for a good chunk of the film. He's also haunted by his memories of Jean Grey, whom he had to kill in a previous film (which I have yet to see). I wasn't too keen on the changes made to the Viper, f/k/a Madame Hydra, from her portrayal in Bronze Age comics, but ah well. Overall though, a great flick. Over at Sequart.Org, btw, Dr. Julian Darius provided an excellent review, albeit with spoilers.
I thought it was pretty good, better than the the previous solo-Wolverine movie. Not something I'll ever need to own though.
Just saw it and I LOVED it!
I still wish Marvel Films would use more mainstream characters to flesh out the cast, but it's a small gripe.
And once again, it's just really not a movie for little kids, IMO, and the PG-13 rating is deserved and appropriate.
The Silver Samurai is not given a traditional origin, but this works a LOT better than the Mandarin's film treatment, IMO.
And the airport scene at the very end gave me goosebumps, esp. with that surprising return of.....
