Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Karen: Nobody really seems in the mood to talk about horror movies, so how about we switch gears and rap about Cap?

Wow, this one's even got Robert Redford in it. Cool.
Also, I see that Black Widow is going to be a supporting character in yet another of these movies, instead of headlining her own. Hmmmm.

Uhhh...this kinda looks like a turkey. And these are probably half the best scenes in the movie. I feel like I just watched an episode of Airwolf.

I've not read any of the Winter Soldier stuff, so I can't comment on the storyline. What I do notice is that Cap in his Marvel Now (or whatever they're calling current continuity these days) SHIELD outfit is getting Chris Evans on screen sans the mask a lot. We've long lamented that aspect of Marvel movies -- guys with masks not wearing masks. So this fits.

But overall, I liked what I saw. Hey -- it's not every day you see a SHIELD Helicarrier crash to Earth!

Masks tend to look really stupid in live action superhero movies, so I am all for using them less when it makes sense. As Cap doesn't have much of a secret identity to protect, the whole cowl thing makes no sense and also looked particularly dumb in Avengers.

Looks good to me.

I read the Winter Soldier stuff and thought it was OK, not great. So when I saw that the movie was adapting Winter Soldier I just sighed and figured it would suck. There's Cap stories I would rather see...

Having said that, I think this trailer looks good and I'm kinda excited about this movie now in spite of myself. Black Widow? Check. Falcon? Check. I have to say it looks fun...

I find it interesting that Robert Redford in in this film. For some reason, I've always associated him with Steve Rogers. I think that's how I thought he was supposed to look like. I wonder if somebody else didn't make that association.

I like the fact Redford's in the flick as well, but my cynical self seems to ponder, 'Where were these Hollywood heavyweights when the first film was bein' made and it was anyone's guess whether it would turn out alright...?'

Anywho, like Doug, I have no personal background (or interest) with 'Winter Soldier', other than it being a DUMB excuse to bring Bucky back. While not as bad as the terrible decision to bring Gwen back, it still represents Marvel milkin' the past for new ways to repackage old storylines and conflicts ~ Most nowhere near close to meeting older reader approval, and younger readers not really caring either way..

Personally I think this looks like it's going to be WAAAY better than I thought it would. In fact, it looks like it may be one of the best solo character Marvel movies so far. I'm a lot more excited for this than the upcoming Thor flick. (Or the last two Iron Man movies). But then I've always been more of a fan of Captain America than those other two.

Any comments on the look of the Falcon? It was tough to get a great see, but I did like the shape of his wings -- that was a nod to the comics. Winter Soldier, from what I know, looks spot on.

Anonymous, as for Redford looking like ol' Cap, other than Cap perhaps being a bit more 'square-jawed', I find very close similarities with the chiseled facial features and hairstyle circa 1973/74 during Sal Buscema's tenure.

I'm pleased to see Cap appears to be questioning SHIELD's methods in this film. That has me hopeful for the story overall. However, Chris Evans looks entirely too skinny to me. I had the same problem with how he looked in Avengers. He seemed a bit beefier in the first Cap film. Seems like he's slagged off the weight lifting routine.

While I am very happy the Falcon is included, I am 1) annoyed he is another SHIELD agent, 2) hoping they will actually call him "Falcon" (same issue with Hawkeye in Avengers), 3)hating the dreary-looking outfit and hoping it will get redesigned with some red in it.

Karen, I think they are going Ultimate Marvel with the Falcon, in which he is a SHIELD Agent.

I agree with your thoughts on the CA costume, but I've been disappointed far too many times by movie versions of superhero costumes, to the point where I've basically stopped getting my hopes up. On the plus side, that is sort of a comic accurate costume (albeit a modern comic version) of Commander Rogers, Agent of SHIELD.

What troubled me were the shots w/Cap in civies, with the shield which looks all kinds of stupid and takes me out of what looks like a cool scene in the elevator. ( by the way, in response to this website's authenticator, I'm not a robot, tho I can't prove that !) Also,Doug & Karen, great job on this blog.

That authenticator is clearly an unrepentant organocist, Anonymous-ol'-chum. No one should ever be called a "robot" in this day and age.

The proper term, of course, is "Synthezoid-American". (Or "Syntho-Eurasion". . . or similar appropriate categorizer--). As a lifeform composed of about 85% chocolate, I run into this sort of thing all the time. "Cocoa-Terrestrian"-- why can no one get that right??
