Asgard Press Vintage Marvel Calendar 2016

Karen: Hey gang, Just a little note today. I noticed that Asgard Press has announced their 2016 Marvel Comics calendar, and it includes a number of 1970s comics covers this time! While I have generally enjoyed these calendars, particularly since the sheets are perforated and make wonderful posters, I have been frustrated by the lack of 1970s comic art. For 2016 there will be a mix of 60s and 70s covers. You can go to the site (http://asgardpress.com/16-marvel-comics) and click through all of the months to see the different covers yourself. I've included a few here that I am excited about - sorry about the large watermark. The calendar is not yet on sale, but keep your eyes peeled!

I Never Should Have Gotten Rid of.....

Karen: Seeing Doug's Marvel calendar posts recently made me wish I had not gotten rid of my own Marvel calendars so many years ago. There were a lot of really nice illustrations in those calendars, one of a kind artworks that I'd love to have hanging up in my inner sanctum now. I've been getting the Asgard Press Marvel calendars the last couple of years, that have recreations of famous (and admittedly, not so famous) Marvel covers, and been using those to decorate my room, but there are some great pages I'd love to get my hands on, like the Starlin shot of the Surfer, Warlock, and Captain Marvel together. Or how about the 1975 page with the Avengers, Vision front and center?

But today's Open Forum isn't about calendars. No, it's about those things you really wish you hadn't gotten rid of. I'm sure we all have dumped a lot of stuff from our childhoods  I used to have a ton of Star Trek toys, models, etc. But I don't miss them so much. Same with my Planet of the Apes memorabilia. Occasionally, I'll think wistfully about them, but for the most part, I don't regret parting with them. The one thing I did hold on to, across all all the genres I  love, is the books. But the one thing I find myself feeling a real regret over getting rid of is all those Marvel calendars. They didn't take up that much space, and they'd look great on the walls.

So let's hear it - what's the one thing you wish you'd held on to?

More Calendars! Marvel from 1979-80

Doug:  Last week I showed some pix of my calendars from 1976-78.  Today I move ahead to the next two years -- which concludes my Bronze Age calendar collection, and even better yet -- we got a new camera!  Now, lest you get big heads and think, "Gee, this guy is really in our corner!  Talk about above and beyond!", I have to tell you that this has been a long time coming.  My wife does a great job of scrapbooking our sons' adventures.  Lately that's not been so easy due to the nature of our old camera's oft-blurry output.  You have only to check out last Sunday's post to see what I mean.  So, this week I'm still showing off .jpg files (again, my scanner simply isn't large enough to do the calendar images the full-frame justice they deserve), but I hope you'll find the overall quality much higher than last week.  My old eyes think so, at least.

Be on the look-out this time 'round for such Bronze Age stalwarts as Johnny Romita, Jack Kirby, Gene Colan, John Buscema, and Herb Trimpe.  But also keep an eyeball on George Perez, Jim Starlin, Walter Simonson, Frank Miller, John Byrne, Keith Pollard, and Ron Wilson -- you won't be disappointed!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Marvel and DC Calendars: 1976-78

Doug:  Our good buddy David_b dropped us a note last week to say he's itching to buy some of the Bronze Age calendars, but was having a hard time finding any images that might encourage his bidding.  So, since I happen to have six calendars down in the Batcave, I am going to provide some .jpgs over the next couple of Sundays to help him out.  Of course, the rest of you who are curious can peruse these gems as well.  Enjoy!

Disclaimer -- our camera is terrible; 90% of the time the pictures come out blurry.  Couple that with a hand I'm not going to claim to be steady, and I have to report that I had to leave several months out -- believe it or not, the images below were the good ones!  If my scanner was larger, I'd have done this the right way.  But I still hope you'll get a kick out of what I have to show.  Thanks for your understanding!
