Discuss: Orange Characters

Doug: Yeah, that's a weird request. But since it's autumn and tomorrow is Halloween, humor me.

Anonymous said...: I always thought of The Thing as being "rocky" more than "orange". The first "orange" character that comes to mind is Starfire from DC comics. I saw her first in the X-Men Teen Titans crossover. She absorbed language through physical contact. Who knew.

Just a reminder: On Friday from 7 am to 10 pm, all participating IHOPs are giving out free scary face pancakes. Be there or be so uncool dude.

(Literally the only other orange costume I could think of!)

Are we supposed to be commenting on their orangeyness? Their contribution to being orange? The prejudice faced by the orange in our society ?

Hey I just thought of another one: David Copperfield. He has magic powers and he’s definitely orange.

Robert said...: The Thing was always my favorite underdog hero. The Thing's Two in One issues drawn mostly by Pablo Marcos and Ron Wilson. I loved those books because although they didn't get the attention of a super star comic....they had solid stories which I still like to read after all these years. It was the Marvel Essentials series that brought them to my attention again after all these years.

The Thing always appealed to me because of his every man persona and the fact that he did have a life outside of the Fantastic Four. As a solo character you got great super sagas like "The Pegasus Project"...which I have in paperback. It's surprising that he doesn't have a solo comic today. It's too bad we don't have more comics like that today. The writers knew how to tell a good story and you didn't have to invest a lot to money to read one.

Charlton Comics "E-Man" was another one of my favorites from Charlton Comics. He was drawn by Joe Stanton, who went on to illustrate the Dick Tracy daily cartoon strip. E-Man was another well written comic that I'm sorry to say should have been more famous. The Charlton Group of comics always got short changed because they weren't as big as Marvel or DC. However they did produce solid entertaining comics in their day.; October 30, 2014 at 5:07 PM

Unlike the epic event of the month that Marvel is now embracing, it’s the short stories of the team up format that kept me coming back. I can’t even look at the current characters today because they bear no resemblance to the ones I grew up with.

Marvel became a gargantuan entertainment giant with Disney. With the price of a Marvel comic being $3.99 or more; is it any surprise that fans are getting their comics on line or waiting for the trade paperback?; October 30, 2014 at 8:01 PM
Anonymous said...: Lessee here, we also have Sasquatch from Alpha Flight and also Ulik the Rock Troll, a Thor foe. I'm sure there are many others, but these two come to mind. Osvaldo, if you love Aquaman, more power to ya. He was never my cup of tea, but if Jason Mamoa is gonna play him you can bet on Aunt Petunia's daisies this ain't gonna be yer father's Aquaman!

All the above sounds as if I'm channelling my favourite orange character - everyone's favourite lumpy-now-rocky ever-lovin' blue eyed Thing! Ben Grimm is the king of the orange ones as far as I'm concerned. His grumpy yet lovable persona really is one of the most beloved in the Marvel universe. Someone once said that of all the FF the Thing was perhaps most like Jack Kirby in terms of personality; a cigar chomping guy with a heart of gold hidden behind a gruff exterior. Dunno how true that is, but it's how I like to think of Ben and Jack.

Meet Your Hosts on the Bronze Age Babies

Karen and Doug met on the Avengers Assemble! message board back in September 2006. On June 16 2009 they went live with the Bronze Age Babies blog, sharing their love for 1970s and '80s pop culture with readers who happen by each day. You'll find conversations on comics, TV, music, movies, toys, food... just about anything that evokes memories of our beloved pasts!

Doug is a high school social science teacher and division chairman living south of Chicago; he also does contract work for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He is married with two adult sons.

Karen originally hails from California and now works in scientific research/writing in the Phoenix area. She often contributes articles to Back Issue magazine.

Believe it or not, the Bronze Age Babies have never spoken to each other...
